OBJECTIVE

To identify and honor the memory of the early pioneers and settlers of
Murray County, Minnesota.
In so doing we hope to make known the lasting mark
on the county they helped develop,
by recognizing and honoring their descendants.

FIRST SETTLER

"The first to have the honor of settling in Murray County is a man by the name of Jacques who, in 1854. settled on a claim, being the only white man in the county.  He built a trading shanty, continued his trade with the Indians for four years, when he became suspicious of trouble with the Indians and discontinued his trade"

Atlas of the State of Minnesota, Andreas-1874

Settlers from 1857 to 1862

On August 20, 1862, fourteen of the early settlers lost their lives in the Dakota Conflict and are buried at the Lake Shetek monument site.
